Дело в том, что Alexa toolbar интегрирована как в Netscape Navigator, так и Internet Explorer. Чтобы раз и навсегда разъяснить обеспокоенным серферам суть модуля, который нередко идентифицируется специализированными утилитами как "шпионский", в FAQ на сайте компании говорится, что за пунктом меню Tools/Show related links скрывается именно ее технология поиска в Web.

Toolbar Install and Uninstall
Internet Explorer has a built-in feature called "Related Info." This feature can be accessed by clicking the Related button in your browser chrome (located near your forward, back, and stop buttons) or by clicking on Tools and selecting Show Related from the drop down menu. This will open a sidebar in your browser that contains Related Links and Related Site Info. This information is provided by Alexa, so the sidebar says "powered by Alexa" at the top. However, you do not have any Alexa software installed on your computer. This sidebar is built into the browser by Microsoft, and is present in all Internet Explorer browsers, so it cannot be uninstalled.
In order to fill this sidebar with content, when you open it Explorer sends the URL of the page you're on to Alexa and we return the appropriate related information. This information is only sent to Alexa when the Related Info sidebar is open.
